OFCA’s Broadband Performance Test Website Enhanced

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) announced today (28 December 2014) that its broadband performance test website has been enhanced to support measurements of higher speed fixed broadband services.

The test website enables members of the public to measure the performance of their broadband connections, in terms of download speed, upload speed, network latency, packet loss and jitter of the fixed broadband service, and download speed, upload speed and network latency of the iOS/Android mobile broadband service. The enhanced system now allows broadband users to measure fixed broadband connections with speeds up to 1000 Mbps (increased from the previous 300 Mbps), while iOS and Android phone users may continue to use the test website to measure mobile broadband connections with speeds up to 100 Mbps.

Consumers may access the broadband performance test website via the official website of OFCA (speedtest.ofca.gov.hk).

Since its launch in December 2010, the test website has been well received by members of the public. In 2014, the total number of performance tests conducted using the system exceeded 50 million, averaging to about 37,300 tests performed each day.

Background information

The broadband performance test website was launched by the former Office of the Telecommunications Authority in December 2010 for members of the public to measure the performance of their broadband connections. To ensure impartiality and the accuracy of measurement performed, the test website is hosted at the Hong Kong Internet Exchange, which was set up by the Information Technology Services Centre of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The test website measures the key performance parameters, including download speed, upload speed, network latency, packet loss and jitter of the fixed broadband service, and download speed, upload speed and network latency of the iOS/Android mobile broadband service. In January 2013, the website was upgraded for measurement of fixed broadband connections up to 300 Mbps, and iOS/Android mobile broadband connections up to 100 Mbps. In December 2014, the website was further upgraded for measurement of fixed broadband connections up to 1000 Mbps.
